Recently we sent packaging professionals a brief survey to find out a little bit more about their work life. We were delighted with the response and we’d like to share with you a few of the insights we gained in terms of what they love about their job, what they wish they could improve and what kinds of responsibilities they have.

When asked what the best thing about their job is, 36% of responders answered: “I am an essential part of getting things done.” That was an interesting insight, but not a terribly surprising one. After all, everyone wants to feel like they’re not only valued by their employer, but in a position to influence positive change within the company. That way they can change processes that have grown antiquated, iron out flaws in the system and seek out new ways to speed up the whole operation, including implementing new technology. After all, one mark of a great leader is the ability to adapt because what what worked yesterday doesn’t always cut it today.

On the other hand, when asked what the worst part of their job is, 32% of packaging pro’s answered with “having to wait for approvals.” We can all relate to the frustrations that mount when there are snags in the approval process. One person is on vacation, another is bogged down with other priorities and maybe a third is just notoriously slow. Meanwhile, you just want the project to move forward so deadlines are met. The good news is that tools currently exist to dramatically speed up approvals such as all digital proofing workflows, automated tracking of all approvals and comments, triggered reminders, archiving and audit trail creation.

Lastly, a whopping 48% of all respondents reported that they manage one or more brands. For each brand, you’re mitigating the dangers of recall, missed launches, packaging errors and waste, and graphics and creation costs. The right software can reduce the number of iterations in the packaging process, the errors that cause launch delays, and the associated costs. When actions and comments are documented, you can then produce KPI reports in order to identify and rectify issues in the process or with third parties.

There are packaging professionals worldwide who love what they do, but are often hindered by broken systems. And while these individuals may bear the brunt of the blame when things go wrong, they are often heroes who should be showered with acclaim when they discover successful ways to conquer nagging issues in the packaging artwork process.
